Oh me of little faith

England 12 , Australia 10. It beggars belief. I have never missed being in England as much as I do now simply to share the lake of beer that accompanies beating the Australians at anything. In Mrs. Thatcher's words.........Rejoice, Rejoice!

More surreal still is that France beat New Zealand (the best team in the world for 47 out of every 48 months) to set up a repeat of the 2003 semi-final next weekend.

Be sure of one thing; England CANNOT win this World Cup.

Ah, you of little faith - at least as regards the French. They have a long history of making a mess of the New Zealanders on the big occasion, notably in 1999. The French did not play nearly as well as they did that day. In fact, the crucial try resulted from a forward pass. Still, the French tackled superbly and made the All Black backs look very ordinary. An extraordinary achievement.

The French did manage one startling thing: only five scrums against them. That involves not controlling the ball to an amazing extent.

While saying goodbye to the All Blacks, one should also remember the courage of NZ prop, Kees Meuys, in the last tournament in stopping a scrum near the Australian line when he felt Ben Darwin "crack". He saved a man from being paralysed and cost his own team a try that would probably have put the All Blacks into the 2003 Final.

There are better and finer things than winning.
